Pet Predictions – A Sign of the Times

While researching this podcast, we came across an intriguing theme: predicting the type of pet a person should adopt based on their astrological sign. At first, I thought it was a bit “out there”, if you know what I mean. But then I found a second article, and then another, and so I started to take it more seriously.

And you know what? It’s legit. The more I read, the more it made sense: the traits and qualities used to describe people according to their birth month are quite similar to how pets are described.

There’s at least one match for every sign and this is such a popular theme that I’m going to explore it in today’s episode. I have compiled a number of opinions into one list. You can decide for yourself if it has merit. Test it among your friends. Use it as an ice-breaker or party trick at your next get-together. You could be the centre of attention! Let’s get started with:

Aries (March 21 – April 19): A Jack Russell Terrier or a Horse

Bold and passionate, Aries is known for boundless energy and sense of adventure. If you are a Ram, you are probably very social, love to have a good time and be surrounded by laughter.

A lively and active dog like a Jack Russell terrier is one that can meet your pace and keep you company during outdoor explorations. A second suggestion is a horse. The thrill of riding a horse is balanced by its emotional intelligence and de-stressing impact.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20): A Hamster or a Tortoise

Matching their astrological sign with a pet: Taurus individuals appreciate comfort and stability. They can opt for a sweet hamster or an interesting and independent turtle.

Sensible and grounded, Taurus individuals appreciate comfort and stability.

The Bull is usually mellow and at times just a little bit lazy. A loyal and low-maintenance pet would suit your personality well, one that can provide companionship without demanding constant attention. You can take the cuddly route with a sweet hamster or the even lower-maintenance option of an interesting and independent – but far less snuggly – tortoise.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20): A Parrot or a Chimpanzee

Curious and Social, the Twins are animal lovers who are constantly thinking, talking and engaging.

Clever and a tad hyperactive, a Gemini would bond with a playful and intelligent pet like a parrot. Parrots are known for their social nature and their ability to mimic speech, offering endless entertainment and companionship. A chimpanzee is another pet recommended to match Gemini’s energy and love for interaction. Together, they can have their adventures and goof around all they want!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22): A Hedgehog or Guinea Pig

Nurturing and emotional, the Crab has a lot of love and attention to offer.

Taking care of someone who needs them makes them happy, so a rescued pet would be great in concept. However, given their tendency to being a tad moody, a high-energy puppy might not be the best fit. A small pet like a cute hedgehog or a guinea pig would be a better match. They both crave companionship and enjoy being cuddled, needing the TLC that comes naturally to you.

Leo (July 23 – August 22): Bengal Cat or Parrot

Charismatic and fun-loving Leos enjoy being in the spotlight and seek companionship that matches their vibrant personality.

The Lion loves beautiful, dramatic things so it’s instinctive to choose a pet that stands out and attracts attention. Although maybe too obvious, the Bengal cat is a perfect mate. Unique, exotic and beautiful. Another showy and sociable pet for Leo would be a wildly coloured and plumed parrot to learn mimicry and listen to their owner. In the home, a tropical fish tank would be appropriately stunning and provide a soothing presence while allowing you to showcase your own flair.

Virgo (August 23 – September 23): A Fish or Hamster

Organized and detail-oriented, a Virgo is known for their meticulous nature and high standards.

Virgos don’t have time to entertain anyone, and prefer friends and companions who keep themselves occupied. They have very little tolerance for a pet who might shed a lot or leave a messy trail. So a fish is a good option – it can be interesting to observe but they do not demand attention or require too much care. A hamster is an equally good match; they have their wheel to keep them busy. A dog could provide the loyalty and order that aligns with your organized lifestyle as long as it is well-trained and agrees to structure and a strict routine.

Libra (September 23 – October 22): Two Rabbits or Two Lovebirds

Harmonious and balanced, a Libra likes to be surrounded by beautiful things.

So while your pet should delight the senses: lovely to look at and luxurious to touch, it also must be peaceful and low-maintenance to complement your serene nature. A pair of sweet bunnies is perfect: cuddly, loving and adorable. Or a duo of beautiful lovebirds. Or goldfish to create a calming ambiance and allow you to find solace in their graceful presence. Because Librans value relationships and the companionship of a loyal partner, they would never want their pet to be lonely. Note to self: same-sex bunnies, please.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): A Snake or Chinchilla

Intense and loyal, Scorpios are known for their passion and depth of emotions. They can be both intimidating and shy and expect nothing less than unwavering loyalty.

A great match for an intriguing Scorpio who can teeter on the edge of the dark side is an exotic snake or even a tarantula – their mystery makes them feel like a kindred soul. A less chilling option is the chinchilla, a smart, inquisitive and loving little rodent. Independent and set in their ways, just like a Scorpio. As a bonus, they are clean, quiet and low maintenance with the softest, silkiest fur.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): A Horse or Labrador Retriever

Matching your astrological sign to a Pet is such a popular theme. Sagittarius: a Horse or Labrador Retriever suit you best!

Adventurous and free-spirited Sagittarians possess a sense of wanderlust that keeps them on the move. They need an equally friendly and enthusiastic pet who is happy to be active and outdoorsy with their owner, or a low-maintenance one who does not require full attention.

Two options: A loyal and affectionate Labrador Retriever makes for the sweetest human-doggy friendship. Or an adventurous and intelligent horse would offer a unique bond, either accompanying you on your journeys or biding her time in a cozy stable.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): A German Shepherd or Guinea Pig

Ambitious and disciplined, Capricorns are known to be super hard workers who like having their own special cliques and exclusive friendships. They wouldn’t want a companion who is everyone’s best friend.

So a pet that requires structure and discipline, say a well-trained and intelligent breed like a German Shepherd, would be an excellent choice. Their loyalty and eagerness to please align perfectly with your responsible and goal-oriented mindset. If you spend more time at the office than at home, you might be better off with a guinea pig or two: they can be okay on their own for a bit, but they still need that nurturing love and care you can provide.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 19): Birds or a Cactus plant

Independent and innovative, Aquarians are known for creative thinking. Not too keen on being relied on, this water sign’s pet would pretty much need to care for themselves.

One suggestion that made me laugh was a cactus plant, rarely requiring even water and not at all interested in engaging in small talk. For a pet as unique as their owner, an exotic colourful bird would prove to be smarter and more interesting than cuddly. Also unique would be an independent and low-maintenance hedgehog who is self-reliant and requires minimal social interaction.

Pisces (February 20 – March 20): A Rabbit or Cavalier King Charles

Imaginative and compassionate, Pisceans are emotional people who love to be loved.

The cliché might be to suggest a fish for a Fish, but it is almost impossible to cuddle with a fish. No, the quiet and gentle Pisces is best suited to a soft, playful rabbit. Another route would be to find a pet that can connect with your empathetic nature, such as a gentle and intuitive Beagle, Bichon frisé or – my pick since we’ve entered the Carolean era – the Cavalier King Charles spaniel. These breeds are often trained as therapy dogs to provide comfort and emotional support, aligning perfectly with your compassionate personality.

There are many factors to consider when seeking that perfect pet to complement your personality and lifestyle. If you are a single owner, your zodiac sign can serve as a valuable guide. Keep in mind, though, that a multi-member household will have that many unique traits and preferences. So do look at the complete picture when choosing the pet to bring joy, love, and a deep sense of connection to your life.

So that’s it for today. Gotta go have Lucy’s cards read.
