Pet Tale by Lauri Richardson

Long ago and far away, there lived a pair of star-crossed puppies born to live happily ever after. This is their story. Stop me if you’ve already heard it.

It’s the tale of Roam-eo and Jewelie-Pet.

Little Roam-eo was born on a farm. A small energy-filled Jack Russell, he was given full freedom to spend his days playing with farmyard animals and all the children in the county who came to visit. He had but one job: to stand watch inside the henhouse overnight and alert Farmer Fred of any unwanted visitors.

Simple enough, right? Should have been. But Roam-eo had one bad habit: he could not stay put for very long. He liked to wander around the property and sometimes even head down to the pond for a midnight swim.

And so it came to pass one night, while he was downtown at the bowling alley dancing for hot dogs, a nasty fox broke into the henhouse and stole all the eggs. Farmer Fred was not impressed and abandoned poor Rom-eo at the Humane Society.

On the other side of town, there lived a tiny puppy. She was bred to be a miniature pocket puppy and her chi-chi owner just loved her to bits. The centre of attention everywhere she went, she was pampered with treats and trinkets all the day long. They called her Jewelie-Pet. It was a happy existence for about 3 months. Then, oddly, Jewelie started to grow. Her little dresses and booties began to split at the seams. She no longer fit in her pink leather carry pouch. Her callous owner wanted nothing to do with her, and so she too was abandoned at the Humane Society.

And so the story goes that these two fun-loving creatures bonded in friendship at first sight. The staff at the shelter could not bear to let anybody adopt them – now they are inseparable and serve as the welcoming committee. If you visit today, you’ll find them busy decorating the place with hearts and ribbons to celebrate Valentine’s Day!
